A Pincer Movement is a classic tactic of war, and one of the best.

So, I have a couple of questions.

Can we do pincer movements on AtWar?

If so, how do we do them?

And, finally, are there different ways of doing them and if so what ways are there?

Post anything you think you'd consider a pincer movement.

I don't think tactical movement has much to do with it. It'd be hard for us to move whole lines at precisely the same location, even harder to attack/defend while doing it. Really we're just moving units back and fort and once your opponent catches on he'll just make a big ass wall between you and anywhere important & counter attack by taking your cities and walling your capital.

While many aren't especially relevant in their most literal sense (i.e. the formation and movement of huge walls of forces) some of those tactics are similar to those used in game, I'd say? The hammer and anvil is analogous to the use of stealth units by two eurasian powers, the last two look like a rather desperate style of defense I use occasionally with MoS where I leave marines outside of cities, allow them to be taken then retake, destroying the opponents advancing armies without having to fly in infantry, etc.

Not yet xD. It's from a casual game (I could never have the time to set that up in quick). I am fighting a player who has Asia & North America. I have India, mid-east and North Africa. Allies have Europe & rest of Africa but are mostly noobs. It's still a tough call. Although my opponent definitely has the advantage.

I think this should be a new official tactic. :) Grimm's Pincer Movement. I'm currently trying ti out in two games, and it seems to work great.

Well, things didn't work out too well in the end. This is the best I did:

After that, my yellow ally (Europe) quit and things went to hell from there. I couldn't withstand a full assault from Asia by my high rank opponent (gege13). Still, was a fun game.

Gege? he is easy to beat. He is weak against cap rushes lots of people are, it works so well with blitz, get their caps and they can't produce any more units there, get there quick and there won't be much opposition, if they take it back then you counter counter strike, there usually is never a counter to that, if they do counter then they wil rush troops from cities to caps and you rush in to take the cities, you now have all the cities and he only has caps, bad income for him and bad troops. Gege always plays marines. If his attack is not successful he will not have a backup plan, always have a backup plan.

Basically play it like chess, keep your cards hidden to your opponent and plan several turns ahead, when he falls he will fall hard.

I'm fairly confident I could have beat gege in a 1v1. Even in this game, if I had Europe, I might have won. As it was though, it was a tough situation. Initially, this was a world game with over 15 players. Gege managed to grab all of Asia because of quitters while I was fighting 2 opponents in the middle east. Alot of infighting in Europe allowed him to grab the Americas also. Towards the mid-game, my noob ally had all of Europe, another ally had Africa, I had India & the middle-east. Gege had Asia and the Americas. I tried to coach my ally, and we were doing ok for a good 50 turns. The game lasted 80+ turns. I managed to hold India until the very end. I even had a "Learster" set up in N.America. Anyway, all of that bombed when my ally quit...

Eh, pick your fights, I would never join a game if there's no good spaces left against even an okay player. EU is usually crowded and you will never ever win in middle east or africa. Start off in one of tree major continents that way you are fighting 2 major powers being one yourself otherwise you are fighting 2 others with insignificant power. N america, china/japan, EU if not crowded. you can play S america if you are a fast moving strat like SM or blitz with the aim to get a fast entry into the USA which will usually be still fighting. Also don't ally noobs, it is better to just take their countries easy. In fact don't ally much at all, you need to grow as much as possible. Only ally if you are really getting bogged down and can't fight multiple fronts.

You pick one or to reliable allies at the start of the game, not noobs, and mid game sometimes they won't accept

Thanks for the advice guys, but I already do most of this stuff. Like you said, I was forced to ally because I would have been caught in between gege (Asia) and a noobish-allyfag EU coalition. So I had not choice but to ally the noobs. Like you said, EU was crowded. So was N.America. And Asia had 3 players at start. I took Pakistan (BTW, GW Pakistan is a good pick in a world game - I think it was a 10K).
Anyways, I like challenging games. And this was definitely a good challenge.

When you pick outside of the 3 major places of power you are betting on there being a long fight there that you can capitalise on, if not you are at the mercy of them, if I were you I would have picked east asia even if there were 3 players there.

Also don't let a GW user build up units, you have to fight them quick before they get too powerful in numbers.

I disagree. With 3 players fighting in East Asia, I would have taken India without a problem and then eventually gained the upper hand in China. I prefer that to starting right in the middle a cluster of high ranks. BTW, I was playing GW against gege's MoS.

Funny, I sometimes suspect that some casual game players artificially crowd a continent with their alts. A few turns later, when these alts all mysteriously quit, the "lucky" remaining player now has the whole continent open... Not saying that this happened in my game against gege, but in other games, I get the distinct impression that this is the case.
