Does anyone have experience with catching rats?

I've been fixing up my house's roof with my dad because the wood is rotting and rain is seeping in. while fixing the roof, i found tons of rat shit in an area between the roof and the ceiling (kind of like an attic but not really) and hear rat sounds between the walls. problem is we cant really do anything drastic like breaking the walls or shit like that and i am very confused on how they got there. does anyone know how to deal with this?

Also you can go traditional and mix up flour, yeast (idk if that's how u call it? and sugar, put it in a small shallow pot from which they can go in or tuna cans for example, put the mix there and u can put some peanut butter on top to lure them in.

the problem with the poison thing thought is that im scared it would die inside the walls.

Make a rolling log rat trap. Works very well and easy cleanup.

Make a small hole in the wall and stuff a starving cat in there.

Like helly saied have take a cat from the street and throw it in there.

If it dies inside the walls they'll decompose, they'd do fine, the smell may be horrible though.

I'd suggest you do the sugar and flour stuff I told you, place it in the attic as a test and see if it gets touched by them, considering the fact they can't digest it they'll just quickly die, it's kinda like how dogs can't digest chocolate and get instant attacks and blockades.
